HUNTINGTON -- It was founded in 1871 by Collis P. Huntington as thewestern terminus of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway. Today, with a population of about 50,000, Huntington is West Virginia's second largest city. From the western city limits of Westmoreland to the eastern city limits of Altizer, the city that lies along the Ohio River still holds on to mementos of its past such as brick-paved, tree-lined streets. But the city also is paving the road to the future with a restaurant, retail and entertainment complex, a growing university and two state-of-the-art medical facilities.

The downtown area, which has boundaries from 1st Street east to Hal Greer Boulevard and from the Ohio River south to 8th Avenue, serves as the heart of the city. Huntington City Hall and the Cabell County Courthouse are located at the corners of 8th Avenue and 5th Street. Built in 1901 and 1914, respectively, they are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and currently house county and city government offices.

Two blocks north on 8th Avenue sits the Big Sandy Superstore Arena, a 9,000-seat arena and conference center that hosts dozens of concerts and community events.

Across the street from the arena is Pullman Square, a $60 million retail, entertainment and restaurant complex. Tenants include Marquee Cinemas, a 16-screen movie theater; Starbucks; Cold Stone Creamery; Digital Communications; The Funny Bone Comedy Club; Max & Erma's; Pizzeria Uno Chicago Grill; Merle Norman; Electronics Boutique; and Empire Books & News.

Marshall University is located on the fringes of the downtown business district. The state's second-largest university, Marshall has an enrollment of approximately 16,000 students including 4,000 graduate and medical students. The university offers 23 associate, 44 baccalaureate and 46 graduate programs.

The residential areas of the city are generally located in three spots: the West End, South Side and East End. The West End consists of the Westmoreland, Central City and Harveytown neighborhoods. The Ritter Park area, southeast hills and Fairfield neighborhoods comprise the South Side, and the Highlawn, Guyandotte, Altizer, Walnut Hills and Beverly Hills neighborhoods make up the East End.

Cabell Huntington Hospital is located in the Fairfield neighborhood of Huntington. The hospital offers specialized care centers such as the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Burn Unit and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. The hospital also serves as the home base for the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University. In 2002, the hospital broke ground for the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center, a $44 million project that is scheduled to be completed by early 2006.

The city's other large medical facility, St. Mary's Medical Center, is located on the East End of Huntington. St. Mary's offers inpatient, outpatient, emergency and trauma services, and also is affiliated with the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. St. Mary's is home to the St. Mary's School of Nursing and the St. Mary's School of Radiologic Technology, both of which are affiliated with Marshall.

The medical center is in the process of constructing a $28 million regional heart center and wellness center, and an expanded emergency department.
