Barboursville Features Mix of Business, Rural Life
Not far out of Huntington, people can find both rural scenery and a bustle of consumerism in the Village of Barboursville.
The town boasts a 700-acre park of lakes, mountains and hiking paths. Not far from the pastoral setting of the park resides the largest shopping mall in the state, The Huntington Mall.
The mall is located just off U.S. 60 in Barboursville and houses 130 stores, which includes restaurants, boutiques and department stores. Many retail stores surround the mall including Goody's and Value City.
Only a few minutes west on U.S. 60 from the Huntington Mall sits another growing shopping plaza, Merritt Creek Farm. This plaza of 30-plus shops also houses department stores and boutiques, including Home Depot, Target and Marshall's.
The plaza also has restaurants and the state's first freestanding Starbucks.
A few miles further west on U.S. 60 from Merritt Creek Farm resides a burgeoning shopping center known as River Place. This center, located across from Kroger near the entrance to downtown Barboursville, houses many locally owned restaurants and stores.
Leaving the shopping mall, visitors can find historic buildings and nature surrounding them in Barboursville. The historic town center features turn-of-the-century buildings and homes that endured the strife of the Civil War.
Passing through the center of town, visitors can follow the signs toward Barboursville Park. This sprawling, 700-acre recreational area rests on the site of the old county prison farm. A lone guard tower still stands watch over the park as a remnant of the past before the village converted the farm in the early 1980s into a park.
Miles of walking trails weave their way through the tree-laden mountains. People can find plenty of places to picnic in the bucolic landscape of the park.
Bring a fishing pole and take your chance at catching the big one in the 17-acre, man-made fishing lake. The village stocks the lake with catfish and trout.
Soccer fields and a rifle range also can be found at the park.
The town comes alive with music, parades and rides every fall for the Fall Fest in September. The four-day festival usually draws about 10,000 people to the village a year and often features top-name country music acts.

Another staple of the Barboursville community is the century old First State Bank. The First State Bank was started in 1905 by several local businessmen, including P. A. Vallandingham. Over 100 years later, The First State Bank remains an independent community bank that has expanded into Huntington and Teays Valley.
